Kudditji adds a little bit of sunshine, on a winters day

Renown for his bold, heavily painted works, Kudditji’s latest work at Fanuli’s showroom in Cremorne is a slightly out of his normal sphere. Using a reduced palette of three shades of yellow, he has thinned down his paint before applying it to the canvas, giving it a translucent, almost gossamer thin quality. The size of the work (1500 x 2000), coupled with the intensity of a single colour, make a really confident, sunny, contemporary statement.

Barbara Weir’s beautiful paired back elegance

 

This very beautiful work by Barbara Weir graces the entrance foyer of a home in Church Point, NSW.  Executed using a minimal palette of blue, white and lilac, the painting welcomes guests in to the home and acts as a pre-curser to the stunning water and bush views of the penninsular below.  An antique french chandelier, Persian rug and modern tin barrel stool complete the elegant, yet eclectic look.

Revisiting glorious Gloria

Going through my photo library I came across this image which continues to rock my aesthetic world!

For some years now, Aboriginal Art Interiors and Orient House of Glebe NSW have enjoyed a symbiotic relationship – I hang my art on their walls and it truly compliments their range of wonderful African and Asian artifacts and furniture. This picture illustrates how tribal objects work so well together, wherever they originate from. Set against a deep tobacco coloured wall, “Leaves” by artist Gloria Petyarre, employing a minimal cream and white palette, compliments the raw boldness of an African mask and the aged patina of an antique chinese alter table.

The perfect Tingari by Ronnie Tjampitjinpa

When my colleague told me that Ronnie Tjampitjinpa was working with him, the timing was perfect for my new business artplacement.com.au to purchase a magnificent big black and white Tingari from the great man himself. The immaculate precision of this piece, painted specially at my request, will without a doubt, be a corner piece of the rental collection, as long as we can manoeuvre it’s 1900 x 1900mm frame into sometimes inaccessible client premises.

Please enjoy the progress shots, which I feel convey a real sense of calm and tranquility as Ronnie worked his way up and down the canvas.

Contemporary Aboriginal right at home

To a large degree this room was designed around Minnie Pwerle’s superb “Awelye” painting – just the way it should be!

Given the minimal colour palette of cream, white and burnt umber, with a splash of green and touch of red, the painting has a simple, yet striking beauty that draws you in to it’s movement and rhythm. The subject matter, Awelye, conveys the movement of the women’s breasts, as they perform their ceremonial dances. On closer inspection, you can almost see how the breasts are dancing in pairs, some left to right and others the reverse.

Its all about Kudditji!

I have just spent time in Alice Springs with Kudditji Kngwarreye. An extraordinary visit, where I sat with him while he painted, singing his way through a beautiful vivid blue and white panel. Having loved Kudditji’s work since I was first introduced to it, it was a great honour to sit with him and to have the opportunity to tell him what his art means to me, how moved I am by it, how it physically grabs my soul – even thinking about it now, my heart rate quickens, there is a palpable energy that his paintings impart.

That same painting hung in Fanuli Furniture, Cremorne for only a few days before a client walked into the store and fell instantly in love with it – just the way it should be!

MITJILI NAPURRULLA PAINTING IN ALICE SPRINGS

I have just received images of a stunning new painting by Haast Bluff artist Mitjili Napurrulla, who is currently painting for a colleague of mine in Alice Springs.
This particular piece showcases Mitjili’s very iconographic style, which is more pronounced when she restricts her palette to monotone colours such as black and white. She has been particularly careful applying the white stipple over the black paint work to create refined, elegant sybmols of her dreaming, Watiya Tjuta.

This painting measures 1980 × 2400mm and would make a very bold statement in a double void space or large blank wall.

KUDDITJI KNGWARREYE STOPS TRAFFIC!

A stunning work by Kudditji Kngwarreye hanging in the window at Macleay on Manning – one of Sydney’s most beautiful boutique retailers in Potts Point.

Commanding an entire wall of this eclectic elegant retailer, the painting, measuring 1500 × 2400mm, epitomizes how relevant and contemporary Aboriginal art is in the life of the city today.

From the Land to the canvas

On a recent visit to Alice Springs, Walpiri artist Judy Watson Napangardi arrived with her own stock of fresh bush tomatoes to eat. The bush tomato is one of the stories that Judy depicts in her paintings – see below.
Judy’s paintings are characterised by strong organic lines and circles and heavily textured overlays of sweet muted pastel tones or the more vibrant primary hues.
